Spence Gallery presents the following four seasoned artists, each with 30 to 40 years of practice:

Charly Palmer is an illustrious artist with a professional art practice that spans over 30 years. He is known for weaving the history, culture, contributions and celebration of African Americans into his art. Most recently he was responsible for the artwork on John Legend's most recent CD cover and TIME Magazine invited him to do a cover in recognition of the Black Lives Matter movement and American Independence in 2021.

Thierry Alet, a graduate of the Pratt Institute, has been working as a professional artist since the 1990s. Over his career, he has used text for his signature series which he refers to as the manuscript paintings. He has painted text on canvas, on walls and as murals.

This Dream Series is an evolution of Alet’s manuscript paintings. In this instance, for the first time, Alet paints on African wax fabric and the text he uses is his own. “I dream the same dream over and over again” is in reference to Martin Luther King’s icon speech. Using African wax fabric, itself fraught with a complex history, adds another layer of meaning and begs even more questions. The audience must decide how each of these pieces can be woven together for a meaningful, layered narrative.

Pita Ohiwerei uses his signature version of impressionist painting to elevate the ordinary and the everyday. He balances improvisation with intention as he works creating paintings that are calming.

Shastri Maharaj’s paintings presents solitary figures set against vast clear skies and golden fields. In doing so, he explores universal human responses to the environment, such as silence and emptiness, at the same time, he provides a social and visual commentary on the landscape, people, and culture of his birthplace, Trinidad and Tobago.
