Works by Benvenuto Tisi, known as Il Garofalo, and the brothers Battista and Dosso Dossi show the legacy of his epochal art in sixteenth-century Ferrara in Upper Italy.
With the monumental Triumph of Bacchus, Dresden possesses one of Garofalo’s main works, which was painted based on a sketch by Raphael. Saint George and the Archangel Michael by the Dossi brothers also reveal a strong relationship to Raphael’s visual concepts that had become widespread by way of drawings and prints. The way in which artists from Ferrara oriented themselves on this ideal and drew inspiration from his work is striking. They combined Raphael’s compositional style and figural types with the clear, luminous colouration of Venetian painting of this period to create a completely individual visual language.
