Born in 1898, Dutch artist Maurits Cornelius Escher, most often called M.C. Escher, is internationally known for his self-described “mental images,” which connect to mathematics and various other branches of science. Considered by some to be a “one-man art movement,” he remained outside of the principle art establishment throughout his lifetime. But Escher was later heralded in the psychedelic era of the 1960s and 1970s and celebrated today for his distinctive mental puzzles.

This exhibition was organized through a variety of perspectives on Escher’s work from the curator, Dena Woodall, the collector, Michael S. Sachs, researchers, artists, mathematicians, and scientists. In some sections there’ll also be examples of Escher’s enduring influence on popular culture throughout the decades. We hope you enjoy this truly unprecedented opportunity to explore M.C. Escher’s multidimensional realities.
