Ulana will remain on view through the 2023-2024 school year. This exhibition showcases paper weavings created by the first grade Papa Wauke class. These weavings honor their kupuna and traditions of ulana, a skill which has been revered as one of the most prominent art forms in Hawai'i. Ulana will remain on view through the 2023-2024 school year. This exhibition showcases paper weavings created by the first grade Papa Wauke class. These weavings honor their kupuna and traditions of ulana, a skill which has been revered as one of the most prominent art forms in Hawai'i. Using traditional lauhala (woven hala leaves), the early Hawaiians were innovative in their use of native Hawaiian plants where they used the method of lauhala to create boat sails, baskets, hats and mats. The first grade art class takes this tradition and adds a modern twist, creating their own paper weavings with watercolor, ink, and kapa print. The finished works are the Artists' exploration of the interplay between painting, printing, and weaving. Each piece is unique to the Artist, rendered with their own flavor, mark making, and personal allusions.
