As the recipient of a bachelor’s degree from Hunter College (1977), attendee of Graduate Ceramics at Pratt Institute, and holder of a master’s degree in education from Fordham University (1989), Gloria is well trained in the theory and techniques of her art. Her ceramic sculptures are distinctive in that they appear to be hewn from stone, rescued from the ruins of some ancient civilization that fell upon challenging times. Her sculptures challenge our notion of beauty and express deep human feelings. Gloria’s work transcends the limitations of academic training and moves into the arena where the mysterious combination of inspiration, imagination, training, and talent combine to produce works that reach into your heart.

Creative Process.

Gloria attempts to create a dialogue with the viewer using clay and the human form. She chooses, however, to remain silent about their intentions. Thus, requiring an act of empathy by the viewer to try and decipher their meanings. It is through this emotional and spiritual analysis that her forms become meaningful to the viewer. Such a personal exercise, Gloria’s sculptures tend to garner a variety of interpretations, meaning different things to different viewers. Through the fragmentation of her clay forms, she attempts to create the increasing human freedom provided by the metaphor of art. A visual anarchy that captures external destruction and subsequent decay experienced by our modern society and its underlying disorders.
