You cannot talk about such things because you always en... more >> SPARC* - Spazio Arte Contemporanea presents a solo show of the French artist Jacques Martinez (1944). The booth is a selection from the works on display in Venice during the 2019 Biennale: large scale paintings, bronze and plaster sculptures, acrylic drawings on paper.
“The woman you have loved for two days, the first time you get back from New York, each time you return to Venice. You cannot talk about such things because you always end up making foolish remarks”.
This is what Jacques Martinez wrote in a book in 1985. In 2016, after loosing his beloved wife, he returned to Venice again, where the deepest pain in his life revolved around new horizons. It brought an extroversion leap in his practice, which tends to put aside composition and pure color to come closer to the process of metamorphosis. His recent works are throws of obscure matter which solidifies in a form that in its coincidence amounts to a reality, since what matters is the transition between states (as in the acrylic drawings on paper or in the black bronze sculptures). Or the rustling of chaos that struggles with the geometric grids on the surface of the paintings. To say it in Bernard-Henri Lévy’s words, “if there is a conviction that has never left him, in the thirty years that I have observed and commented on his work, it is that art exists, not to repeat the world, but to recreate it”.
This is the path through uncertainty that Martinez presented at SPARC* - Spazio Arte Contemporanea, during the Venice Biennale in 2017 and 2019, from which we have detached a fragment to take it to ART PARIS. The booth marks the return of Jacques Martinez on the Parisian scene after more than a decade.
