\n\nThe gallery is based in the historical neighborhood of Madragoa, that gives the name to the space itself and acts as a statement: the project of the gallery looks at how to set a deep ... more >> MADRAGOA is a contemporary art gallery founded by Matteo Consonni, Italian and former director of Galleria Franco Noero in Turin, and Goncalo Jesus,Portuguese biologist and researcher who has been involved in the discourse on contemporary art for years.
\n\nThe gallery is based in the historical neighborhood of Madragoa, that gives the name to the space itself and acts as a statement: the project of the gallery looks at how to set a deep conversation with the city and its extraordinary potential, not only by representing Portuguese artists, but also by enabling the local production of each show, also from artists from abroad, setting a dialogue within global artistic practices and local craftsmanship and ideas. The gallery will constantly create experiences of research and production for its artists locally, supporting a program of internal residencies, and promotes its program also through the participation to a number of international Art Fairs.\n\nAt the moment, the gallery actively represents artists from Portugal,Italy,Ecuador,Mexico,Poland, Spain and South Africa while keeping on researching to slowly enlarge its program.\n\nMadragoa opened on April 28th, 2016 with a solo exhibition, mainly produced in Portugal after a production experience of a month and a half, by the Italian artist Renato Leotta. Moreover, in the past months Madragoa supported ambitious production of artists such as Adrián Balseca, Rodrigo Hernández and Joanna Piotrowska.\n\nSince January 2017, Madragoa opened ENCIMA, another exhibition space located in the flat on top of the gallery main space, where the artists can be hosted and where a program of curatorially oriented projects is developed, as well as a series of solo shows of artists from younger generations. From September to December 2017, the gallery also opened EMBORA, a temporary space dedicated to short exhibitions of dialogues between two artists, and will work in the future on similar temporary experimentations
