The Migration Series marks a time between 1910 through 1970 when Black Americans moved from the Southern states to the Northern states of what was thought to be a better life. Emmanuel Gillespie utilizes elements from previous works in his Migration series which makes for a culminating and pivotal moment in his artistic career. These exceptional works mark the artist's marriage of abstraction and the figurative with remnants of surrealistic gestures layered throughout. Gillespie's passion for color coupled with his narratives of history create compositions worth conversations. Each work in the Migration series serves as moments in history and enables the stories of the past to resurface through imagery and mark making.
Emmanuel Gillespie’s “I Am” takes viewers through a journey of identity through portraiture,
which embarks on stages of mindset and understanding. Moments in time that mark events in
our world that play significant roles on who we are. These moments are human and real. Social
dynamics come into play, with cultural awakenings in how we portray ourselves and those
around us. Being human embodies so many components of who we are. When one is human
there are no boundaries. The selection of individuals exhibited in I AM are among some of the first to display these notions of cultural awakening through identity.
The Temporary Freedom series depicts moments from childhood innocence where happiness marks a sequence of memories of authentic peace that instill safety and life throughout lapses in time. Lines and forms marry concepts of non-linear color theory.
