Our exhibition focuses on experimental approaches to photography and alternative processes in contemporary European and Latin American modernist photography (1930s-1950s). The works on view are not only innovative in their visual language and process, but also rooted in social and political consciousness. The exhibition includes vintage surrealist photomontages from Grete Stern’s series Suenos, which offer a window into the minds of women in mid-century Argentina; as well as vintage photocollages and photomontages from Alexey Titarenko’s series Nomenklatura of Signs, which express the absurd and darkly comic reality of Soviet life just before the collapse of the USSR. Also on view are vintage gelatin silver prints by the prominent German-Argentinian portrait photographer Annemarie Heinrich; pigment prints on gold leaf by Albarrán Cabrera; street photography by Facundo de Zuviría, Sameer Makarius, and Vladimir Sersa; and hand-painted gelatin silver prints by Ingar Krauss and Ann Rhoney.
