The contrast between monumentality and a sense of movement, between randomness and control, and the subtle paradoxes within his paintings are thoroughly investigated in the variety of works exhibited at ArtParis. Created by the artist specially for the fair, Davenport has made some more typical Puddle paintings and above all the newest Splat pieces. In these works, the artist uses short jets of colour squirted against the surface, to form splinters and drips of paint that overlap and interplay, in complex arrangements of marks and colour. He was nominated for the Turner Prize in 1991 and, in 1999, was awarded a John Moores Painting Prize.
