This exhibition showcases paper weavings created by the first grade Papa Pūhala class. These weavings honor their kupuna and traditions of ulana, a skill which has been revered as one of the most prominent art forms in Hawai’i. Using traditional lauhala (woven hala leaves), the early Hawaiians were innovative in their use of native Hawaiian plants where they used the method of lauhala to create boat sails, baskets, hats, mats, and more. Papa Pūhala takes this tradition and adds a modern twist, creating their own paper weavings with watercolor, ink, and kapa print. The finished works are the Artistsʻ exploration of the interplay between painting, printing, and weaving. Each piece is unique to the Artist, rendered with their own flavor, mark making, and personal allusions.
