A Marine Corp Combat veteran, Mathis served two tours in Afghanistan, Herman Province as Automatic Sawgunner with 1/6 Bravo Infantry Battalion. Article "Coming of Age Through War" by Cpl James Clark. Gives a glimpse of his Art through war.

Afterwards he went on to earn a Bachelor’s in Studio Arts in Painting and Sculpting from HBCU, Fayetteville State University under professors Dwight Smith and Soni Martin. Mathis recalls drawing as a child even before he learned to write, but only began painting eight years ago, after his time dealing with PTSD from his multiple combat deployments to Afghanistan. A journey that has led His art to be collected and exhibited throughout the U.S., Cameron Art Museum in South Carolina, Ritz Museum in Jacksonville Florida, Miami Art Basel, Lyndon House in Athens GA ,Harlem Fine Arts Show in Harlem New York. To City Arts in Witchita KS, to name a few public and private Art collections. His work is part of Fayetteville State University permanent traveling art collection, and part of the Permanent collection of the NAAHBCU.
Damien Mathis has his work in the private Collections of Producer and actor David Banner and Rappers like Morray. His work is collected by International Art Archivist, international collectors, public and private occupational practices, Therapist, Doctors and Practices around the Country.

He has donated countless hours to paint personal portraits for Mothers who have lost children and loved ones. To doing florescent fashion shows for different awarenesses like Breast Cancer, Lupus and Psoriasis through body Painting.

His recent body of work includes cataloging historic Artist surround by a subtle environment of their own bodies of Work.
His body of vibrant Portraits to name a few, are of Artist Romare Bearden, Sculptor Elizabeth Catlett, Artist Judy Bowman, Sam Gilliam, Jacob Lawrence, Alma Thomas, Meta Warrick Fuller, Lois Mailou Jones, Selma Burke, Frank Frazier and Augusta Savage.

Damien Mathis also has a historic sculptor portrait of the late David Richmond of the Greensboro 4 in Greensboro at the East White Oak Community Center.

In Fayetteville NC he has a permanent ceramic Mural in The city's visitors Center downtown.

Him and his wife Takieyah Mathis, Humanitarian recipient and Psoriasis Foundation advocate, adopted Clark Park in Fayetteville NC where their goal is to Upkeep and clean the park. Currently the planters are used as a way to promote many forms of active therapy for the public.

Damien Mathis current goal is to help veterans through color therapy on many platforms to combat lost of life and mind to help them feel a sense of belonging and understanding again.
