The Kravets Wehby Gallery is pleased to announce American Pies, a solo exhibition of new work by Aya Uekawa, opening on Thursday, November 17 and running through January 7, 2017. There will be a reception for the artist on Thursday, November 17 from 6-8pm.
Incorporating textured surfaces and natural objects into her paintings, Aya Uekawa adds a tangible depth to this new body of work that highlights her unique sense of multidimensionality. The evocative feminine faces that Uekawa portrays are ringed with a series of objects, sometimes obscuring the still meticulously rendered expressions beneath. Uekawa’s shrouded faces add an extra layer of mystery and seduction, which, combined with her obsessive attention to detail, renders each painting a self-contained world of its own.
Aya Uekawa was born in Tokyo and currently lives in New York. Her paintings have been exhibited at the Baltimore Museum of Art, Nassau County Museum of Art, the FLAG Art Foundation, New York, as well as a solo exhibiton at the Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati. Her work has been featured in Juxtapoz, Nippon Vogue, Flash Art, W, and The New York Times. This will be her fourth solo exhibition at Kravets Wehby Gallery.
