Artist: Miaz Brothers

The subjects represented by the two Milanese brothers are smooth coloured forms that blend on the canvas. They evoke a dreamlike sense of evanescence and require the viewers’ effort to complete the paintings using their knowledge, memories and power of association. For the new series of works, created for the Parisian show, the Miaz Brothers are inspired by neoclassicism, still life and The Origin of the World by Courbet.

The Miaz Brothers (Milan, 1965 and 1968) live and work between London (UK) and Valencia (Spain). Winners of the prestigious 5th Arte Laguna Awards Painting section in 2011 and of the Amposta Museum of Contemporary Art International Biennial Prize in 2010, the artists have exhibited at Thetis in the spaces of the Arsenal of Venice and have been presented in important galleries and international art fairs. The Miaz Brothers have also favoured unconventional exhibition spaces due to the potential of these locations to engage the public’s spontaneous reaction.

At the beginning of their career, during their experimental phase, the two brothers travelled all around the world and explored different artistic techniques, including video, painting and photography. The artists are today renowned for their innovative and original approach in portrait painting: through a skilful use of acrylics they produce enigmatic and evocative artworks, in which the representation appears completely blurry and out-of-focus. Stimulating mnemonic and personal associations in the viewer’s mind, their work aims to engage our visual and cognitive perception.

Miaz Brothers have exhibited on international grounds, presenting in solo and group shows. The most recent shows the artists have been a part of are: ‘Watch this space’ at Lazinc Gallery (London, 2019), ‘Time is Now II’ at Little River (Miami, 2019), ‘Context’ Art Basel (Miami, 2019). Some other group shows worth mentioning are: Contemporary Istanbul (Istanbul, 2015), ‘Timeless’, Fabien Castanier Gallery (Bogotá, Colombia 2015), “Ver Visiones” Museo del Carmen (Valencia, 2014) and ‘Wonderworks’ The Cat Street Gallery, (Hong Kong, 2013).
Their artworks also appeared on the cover of the New York Times in 2013, in Riviera TV Show in 2019 and in the magazine AD Italia in 2020.
