Chantal Gesse was born in Port–au-Prince Haiti. As a Child, Chantal was like any other island girl growing up in the tropics. The rich blue sea was always flowing and the endless summers were ever lasting.
This little girl played under the sun and watched the tall, steep
mountain gently slope into the picturesque aqua blue sea. Her island blessed with the endless rays of bright sunshine and her imagination was rooted into the life it created.
She moved to Harlem at the age of eleven, later attending Parsons School of Design. In art school, she participated in group classes which focused on sketching Renaissance statues. Being Haitian. She yearned to see art reflective of her own identity. In over a thousand visits to the MoMa, she pursued this vision, discovering and deepening her connection with jute rope.
Chantal Gesse captures this fleeting moment of faith, deploying her skills with the oil medium and acrylic paint. The fluidity of her brushstrokes connects us to the joy that she is feeling.
Chantal spent many years in Europe. She has also traveled throughout Africa. It is no surprise that her experience abroad has inspired her paintbrush to bleed colors paralleling her travels. Chantal Gesse paintings are a journey of ever unfolding sheets of satin.
They depict the human form in its natural habitat, her paintings are of the inner self in experience, the mood, the emotions all are poured into her art. The search for self is clearly stated. This rich beginning is the root of Chantal’s creative
expression.
