Biography
Elizabeth Erazo Baez was born in Brooklyn, New York of Puerto Rican parents. Baez's art is greatly influenced by her Hispanic heritage. As a young girl, her family moved from New York to live in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. During this time, she was awakened by Puerto Rico’s color, people, and most importantly, made her connection to the Puerto Rican culture. Her artwork is still impacted from these experiences. Baez depicts visual stories of cultural lifestyles and lush tropical views using bright Caribbean colors.
Baez is an artist, illustrator, curator and art teacher. She is a wife, and a mother of two adult children. She is of the Catholic faith. Baez is currently living in Miami, Florida.
Her artwork has been recognized and has received awards throughout her art career. Baez's art has participated in numerous art donations and fundraisers that raise funds to benefit organizations that assist Latinos and scholarships for education. For the 2020 Latinx Heritage Month, she participated in Bay Path University on a virtual guest panel discussion and “Root and Raices” group art exhibit. Her art is now part of the university’s art collection. Baez other highlights include: part of a selected group to be interviewed by the University of Miami Digital Collections about Caribbean Diaspora Oral Histories; recognized by the State of Florida as a solo featured artist for Hispanic Heritage Month; and named nominee for "100 Top Puerto Ricans in the USA" by New York Hunter College's Center for Puerto Rican Studies.
In addition to being a full time artist, she has served as an art teacher. For over 15 years, she has shared her experience and passion for art with children of all ages. Baez’s work experience includes working with photography, graphic design, and group art exhibits. She has curated for Broward College’s annual Hispanic Heritage Group Art Exhibits for 16 years.
In the summer of 2021, Baez is expected to graduate from Florida International University with of Bachelor of Arts in Art Education, with a minor in Art History. She has received an Associate in Arts, Pathway to a Major in Teaching from Miami Dade College and Associate in Applied Science, in Art and Advertising Design from City Tech.
Baez’s art will be on exhibit in the Harlem Fine Art Show Virtual Art Exhibition from February to July of 2021.
Baez is currently illustrating the bilingual children’s book by author Lesléa Newman “Los Coquíes y el huracán -Una cancion para Puerto Rico” - “Coquíes and the Hurricane - A Song for Puerto Rico.” "It's about a young Puerto Rican girl who loves listening the song of coquies at night and what happens when she and her family have to evacuate their home during a hurricane."
Through her art, she lives as an agent for community change dedicated to service, cultural preservation and advancement of Puerto Rican art across the globe.
